On Monday, June 12, Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan received a call from Knox County Dispatch requesting assistance for deputies at a residence in the Artemus community. Both deputies stated they had been shot. Preliminary investigation indicates that Deputy Keith Liford and Deputy Claude Hudson were at the residence attempting to serve an indictment warrant on 50-year-old John Wesley Bays. Bays opened fire on the deputies inside the residence, striking Liford multiple times and Hudson once. Fire was returned on Bays, and he was pronounced dead by the Knox County Deputy Coroner. Both deputies have since been released, and Deputy Liford is expected to make a full recovery.
