Work started Monday, July 17 to repair a section of KY 80 just out of Elkhorn City going toward Breaks Interstate Park. The site is at mile point 5.2. Temporary traffic signals are in operation so that one lane of traffic is moving at all times. According to Joe Stanley, D12 Engineering Tech Supervisor, the work is expected to take several more days, and should be finished either later this week or early next week. Geotechnical Services International is using its soil nail technique to fix an embankment failure, which involves installing rebar underneath the pavement and filling the break with shotcrete. Wire mesh is then laid over the embankment, then covered in shotcrete to create a solid foundation underneath the pavement.
