Kentucky State Police are investigating the kidnapping and assault of a woman and her son. Around 10:45am Saturday, September 9, the Kentucky State Police and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injured female found by hikers. Jessica Durham was located and rescued at the bottom of an 80 foot cliff near Sparks Ridge Road. Durham was able to tell police that she and her son, James Spoonamore, age 5, were assaulted and kidnapped by 41-year-old Lonnie Belt, of McKee. Durham said Spoonamore was last seen with Belt before he allegedly forced her over the cliff. Belt was located for questioning and taken into custody at 11:30pm on September 9. He was charged with assault, kidnapping and tampering with physical evidence. Spoonamore was found deceased on September 11 around 9:30am. Additional charges related to the child’s death are forthcoming.
