On Tuesday, December 5, the Ashland Police Department Field Ops received a call of a shooting around 4:30am at the Winchester Inn. Officers and paramedics arrived to find Mark Hopkins shot in the head. He was transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center before being transferred to a trauma center in Huntington. Officers identified 35 year old Michael Kelley as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant for Attempted Murder. Boyd County Sheriff’s Department Deputies located information on the suspect hiding in South Point, Ohio. Ashland Police coordinated with the Lawrence County Ohio Sheriff’s Office and the South Point Police Department. Kelley was found by Ohio agencies in a room at the Country Hearth Hotel and taken into custody with the firearm believe to be used in the shooting. A search warrant was obtained with recovered drugs and another firearm. Kelley was transported to the KDMC ER and released to police. He was charged with attempted murder and lodged in the Boyd County Detention Center.
