On Sunday, December 17, 2017, a drug arrest was made following a traffic stop in Harlan County. Deputy Dakota Torstrick was on patrol on KY 38 and conducted a traffic stop in the Verda area. A search of the vehicle was conducted and a container with methamphetamine was located in the center console of the vehicle. Three children under the age of ten were passengers in the vehicle at the time. Derrick Cottrell, 34, of Evarts, and his passenger, Brooke Poteet, 25, of Harlan, were charged with trafficking in controlled substance, controlled substance endangerment to minor, possession of drug paraphernalia, and endangering the welfare of a minor. Both were lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
