Whitesburg Audit Report Alleges Many Businesses Operating Unlicensed

Continuing our coverage on the audit for the city of Whitesburg, the report found the city routinely failed to meet statutory audit and other financial reporting requirements. The city’s noncompliance with these requirements during the examination period resulted in $92,973 of Municipal Road Aid fund being withheld from the city. The report’s findings also include some businesses were operating in the city without a business license, including the law practice of Mayor James Craft. In addition to businesses operating without a license, the city had not been collecting licensing fees from several businesses. Auditor Mike Harmon suggested in his report that the city of Whitesburg update their Code of Ordinance regarding annual occupational license tax.
