On Saturday, January 6, 2018, Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a man following an armed confrontation. The arrest occurred off Laurel River Road following an investigation into a disturbance where the suspect, identified as Michael Trenton Philpot, 23 of Hopkins Cemetery Road, allegedly destroyed several items at his ex-girlfriend’s residence. Philpot had left then returned to the residence following an altercation with another individual. While conducting a welfare check on the ex-girlfriend, deputies were confronted by Philpot, who charged at the door carrying an AR 15 rifle. He threatened the deputies, who attempted to get him to drop the weapon. After a scuffle, Philpot was taken into custody and charged with wanton endangerment, burglary and terroristic threatening.
