One Dead Following Vehicle Pursuit in Rockcastle County

On Wednesday, January 10, 2018, around 12:44am, two Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers engaged in a vehicle pursuit which lead to a fatality in Rockcastle County. The officers were stationary at the entrance of the I-75 southbound on-ramp at Exit 76 in Berea, assisting with work zone construction road closure. They observed a motorhome approach their location on US HWY 21 and run through barriers and construction barrels. Officers attempted to stop the motorhome, but the operator refused. Construction workers present were notified to evacuate the roadway. The driver of the motorhome, later identified as John McCoy, 67 of Chesapeake, Ohio, struck a police vehicle and two sky-lifts head on. The motorhome immediately became engulfed in flames. Officers attempted to remove McCoy from the vehicle but were unsuccessful. McCoy was pronounced dead at the scene by the Rockcastle County Coroner’s Office. No officers or construction workers were injured in the incident.
