Big Sandy Community and Technical College and the city of Pikeville, along with the University of Pikeville, held the 3rd Annual Unity March commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 15, 2018, that concluded with a program at Pikeville United Methodist Church. During the march, Rob Musik, Chaplain and Religion Instructor at UPike, stopped attendees along the route to talk with them about the significance of locations to King, such as the Military Recruitment building and the United States Courthouse. Pikeville Mayor Jimmy Carter and Pikeville Medical Center Chaplain Randy Jones joined at the end of the march. Jones paid tribute to the late Reverend Gene Layne, who was instrumental in starting the march and pushed for unity and togetherness in his community.
