On Wednesday, January 31, 2018, school winners participated in the 2018 Floyd County School District Spelling Bee. The event was held at Floyd Central High School. Jim Sparkman from May Valley Elementary finished as District Spelling Bee Champion, followed by Drake Hatfield of Prestonsburg Elementary, who was runner up. Sparkman will advance to compete in the Ford Motor Company Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee in Louisville on March 17, 2018.
