Citing tobacco-advertising bans as an example, Kentucky District 37 Representative Jeff Donohue has filed legislation that would bar pharmaceutical companies from promoting their opioid drugs in traditional media outlets in Kentucky. Representative Donohue said it is vital we do all we can to turn back the tide of the opioid epidemic. House Bill 225 would ban any person or business from advertising any opiate by its trade, formulary or generic name, including oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine. Professional and trade publications geared toward those who use the medicine as intended would be exempt from the advertising ban. The legislation will be considered during the 2018 Regular Session.
