Five were killed in an apparent murder-suicide on Saturday, February 10, 2018. Paintsville 911 received a call around 3:30pm concerning a shooting at McKenzie Branch. Members of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, where two individuals were discovered deceased in the kitchen. The individuals were identified as Arlene and Wayne Nickell, whose son, Joseph Nickell, was identified as the apparent shooter. A witness said Nickell left the scene in a black Toyota Camry, which was located at an apartment complex on Mill Street in Paintsville. A search of the complex found Nickell and two other victims, identified as Lindsay Vanhoose and her mother Patricia. All three were deceased. Officials reportedly found a suicide note, but are not releasing its contents at this time.
