Barbourville Couple Sentenced for VA and Social Security Fraud

A couple from Barbourville who had previously admitted to defrauding the US Department of Veterans Affairs and Social Security administration, were sentenced on Friday, February 16, 2018. James Baker, 46, was sentenced to 24 months in prison, while his wife, Debbie Baker, 47, was sentenced to 8 months in prison, followed by 8 months home incarceration. Between October 13, 2006 and July 3, 2017, James Baker allegedly exaggerated various mental and physical conditions in order to increase his compensation benefits from the VA, resulting in overpayment of benefits. Debbie Baker assisted by claiming her husband was totally disabled and unable to perform most activities independently.
