The Virginia State Police are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Wise County on Monday, March 26, 2018. The incident occurred around 6pm when a Wise County Sheriff’s Deputy observed a pickup truck driving erratically on Old Route 610. The deputy activated his emergency equipment to initiate a stop, to which the driver of the truck did not comply. The driver entered the southbound entrance ramp to Route 23 where it stopped in the travel lane. The pickup truck driver exited the vehicle armed with a shotgun. The deputy fired at the male subject, who died at the scene. The identity of the driver has not yet been released. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Wytheville Field Office is investigating the incident at the request of Wise County Sheriff R. D. Oakes.
