On Friday, April 13, 2018, around 2pm, Johnson County Deputy Jesse Mullins conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on US 23 in the Wittensville area. An investigation determined the vehicle had the wrong plate and observed the VIN number looked to have been altered. Deputy Mullins called for Deputy Byron Fairchild, who is a certified vehicle inspector, to inspect the vehicle. Deputy Fairchild noticed clues of altering, such as black glue residue on the VIN, as well as damaged rivets. An inspection also revealed the actual VIN concealed underneath. The driver of the vehicle, 21-year-old Cody Craft of Prestonsburg, was arrested and charged with obscuring the identity of a machine, destruction of a VIN number, and selling or receiving vehicle with removed or altered VIN. The case remains under investigation.
