Kentucky Education Commissioner Dr. Stephen Pruitt has resigned. The resignation follows the special called meeting of the Kentucky Board of Education. Following the executive session, the board found there was no cause for termination of Dr. Pruitt, however, he chose to resign effective immediately. House Democratic Leader Rocky Adkins released a statement saying the resignation is a sad day for public education and the children of Kentucky. He added this move appears to undermine Commissioner Pruitt’s work of keeping schools on course academically “all in the name of moving public-education dollars from the public classrooms to the for-profit classrooms of charter schools.” The Kentucky Board of Education named Dr. Wayne Lewis as the interim education commissioner.
