The Wise County Sheriff’s Office has issued a scam alert after receiving information that citizens have been contacted claiming “family members are in danger” or “in jail and need money.” The Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens that this is a common scam. The Federal Trade Commission says scammers may pose as relatives or friends, calling or sending messages to urge you to wire money immediately for an emergency. If you receive a call, message, or any other form of communication similar to this, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftccomplaintassistant.gov and contact the Virginia Attorney General’s Office.
