On Wednesday, May 23, 2018, Prestonsburg 911 received a call of a collision with possible entrapment on Kentucky Route 3 between the caution lights at Highlands Hospital and the mouth of Bays Branch. Upon arrival, it was determined that the operator of a 2007 Mercedes Benz Sedan was deceased. The driver was identified as 42-year-old Jessica Owens of Salyersville. The driver of a 2002 Toyota Sequoia, identified as 40-year-old Elizabeth Lemaster, was extracted from her vehicle and flown via helicopter to Cabell-Huntington Hospital. Investigators determined that Lemaster was traveling northbound when it left the lane of travel and struck the north bound guardrail. Following striking the guardrail, the vehicle reentered the roadway, cross the northbound lane, and struck the Owens’ vehicle head on. The collision remains under investigation by Sergeant Ross Shurtleff.
