Kentucky State Police Pikeville Post 9 have opened a death investigation in the Left Fork of the Johnson Fork community in Magoffin County. Around 8pm Saturday, May 26, 2018, Post 9 received information of a person being found unresponsive in a creek in the 1000 block of Johnson Fork Road in the Gunlock Community of Magoffin County. Troopers responded to the scene along with the Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office and Magoffin County Rescue. Upon arrival, 33-year-old Joseph Smithers of Gunlock was discovered deceased in the creek. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Magoffin County Coroner. An autopsy to determine cause of death is pending.
