Hydration Important for Children Doing Outdoor Activities in the Summer

With warmer weather, that means more time outdoors doing various activities. Norton Children’s Hospital is stressing the importance of hydration this summer. When kids are playing sports or enjoying other physical activities outdoors, it’s crucial that parents and coaches ensure children are drinking plenty of water to avoid dangerous heat-related illnesses, according to Norton Children’s Health and Wellness Coordinator Nikki Boyd. She says sports drinks aren’t needed for kids because they’re designed to replace nutrients kids don’t usually lose. Boyd adds water can be made more fun with a good water bottle or adding flavor or color through fruits and vegetables like strawberries or cucumbers.
