Jefferson County Democratic Caucus joins request for AG opinion on limits of Capitol access

House and Senate members of the Jefferson County Democratic Caucus has joined in the request for Attorney General Andy Beshear’s opinion on whether Kentucky State Police can limit protestors’ access to the Capitol. On two separate occasions, members of the Poor People’s Campaign have been kept from having more than two protestors at a time in the Capitol during normal business hours. Organizers said they had never been subject to such a restrictive policy in other states, although they noted on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, that some states have since cracked down on their protests in the wake of Kentucky’s recent changes. Representative Jeff Donohue, the delegation’s chair, said the new policy violates First Amendment rights and is a vast over-reaction posing as a solution to a problem that does not exist. On Friday, June 15, 2018, the Attorney General’s office said it had granted the request for opinion on the issue.
