The Floyd Central High School Community Problem Solving Team competed in the 2018 International Conference that occurred in early June 2018 at the University of Wisconsin in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Coached by Bobby Akers, the Floyd Central team were finalists at the international competition, placing 4th overall. Their project, Be Smart, Protect Your Heart, was part of the Health Concerns category of the competition. The team was inspired to raise awareness about heart health by the loss of community member and South Floyd employee, Debbie Hall. Some of the team’s activities to raise awareness included partnering with Appalachian Regional Hospital to have blood pressure screenings and informational pamphlets at a basketball game, partnering with the school drama and media departments in creating audio and video public service announcements, and started a walking club.
