On Thursday, July 5, 2018, the Boyd County Detention Center was notified by the Boyd County Coroner the cause of death of inmate Laura Riley, which occurred on June 16, 2018. Riley had been booked on June 14, 2018 on a failure to appear warrant for a misdemeanor trespassing charge out of Greenup County. The coroner ruled the cause of death as an overdose of methamphetamine. The Catlettsburg Police Department is investigating the incident. An internal investigation found no evidence that Riley received methamphetamine from another person. A search of the cell found no additional drugs.
