On Tuesday, July 17, 2018, Sass Sloce from Operation KID presented Wise County Assistant Sheriff Colonel Grant Kilgore with 150 comfort bags for deputies to distribute. Operations Kids In Distress is an organization that provides “Police Comfort Bags” for children that police officers in Wise County and the City of Norton encounter during the course of critical or traumatic events. Operation KID received a $3,000 grant from the Lenowisco Health District that was utilized to purchase supplies for bags, as well as donations from the community. These bags include toothbrush, tooth paste, dental floss, and oral health information pamphlets, other hygiene items, stuffed animals, and blankets. Deputies will distribute the comfort bags to children in need that they encounter while responding to calls.
