One Dead in Fatal Barricade Incident in Breathitt County

A barricade incident in Breathitt County resulted in one fatality and a Kentucky State Police Trooper injured. On Sunday, September 16, 2018, Trooper Josh Collett and Jackson Police Department Officer Daniel Turner responded to a residence on Highway 3193 in the Wolverine community to conduct a welfare check on a woman after family members voiced concerns about her well being. Upon arriving at the residence, officers contacted a male and advised him of the reason for their presence. The man then went back inside and shut the door, then fired a gun through the door in the direction of the police. During an exchange of gunfire, Sergeant Gary Sandlin was shot in the face. He was transported to Kentucky River Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. KSP’s Special Response Team was activated and responded to the scene. The female was safely removed from the residence. A man, identified as 39-year-old Dwayne Robertson, of Jackson, was located inside the residence with a fatal gunshot wound.
