London Cardiologist Sentenced for Health Care Fraud

On Tuesday, October 30, 2018, London cardiologist Dr. Anis Chalhoub was sentenced to serve 42 months in federal prison for health care fraud. Between 2007 and 2011, Dr. Chalhoub implanted approximately 234 pacemakers in patients at St. Joseph London Hospital. Evidence presented at trial showed that dozens of those patients’ pacemakers were medically unnecessary. The jury also heard evidence that Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurers suffered hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses from the unnecessary procedures. In addition to imprisonment, Dr. Chalhoub must pay a $50,000 fine and repay $257,515 to insurers.
