East Kentucky Science Center Hosts Regional Science Fair

The East Kentucky Science Center and Varia Planetarium recently held their 19th Annual Regional Science Fair. More than 200 students and their families from 17 counties around the region competed for first, second, and third place honors. Professionals currently working in STEM fields from Big Sandy Community and Technical College, Floyd County Schools, The Challenger Learning Center, The Hummel Planetarium, and Alltech Laboratories served as judges.

List of winners by grade level below:

4th Grade:

Releigh Hamilton from Eden Elementary was the 1st place winner for 4th Grade with project Water Filter and Turbidity

Logan Dennison from Wrigley Elementary was the 2nd place winner for 4th with project A Battery That Makes Cents

Logan Feltner from W.B. Muncy Elementary was the 3rd place winner for 4th grade with project Shocking Fruit

 

5th Grade:

Mileigh Kilburn from May Valley Elementary was the 1st place winner in 5th grade for project Family Fingerprints

Taylor Couch from Mt. View Elementary was the 2nd place winner in 5th grade for project Big Big Bubbles

Colt Powers from Jenkins Elementary was the 3rd place winner in 5th grade for project Yeast Like Sugar Not Like CO2

 

6th Grade:

Brock Horne from Duff-Allen Central Elementary was the 1st place winner in 6th grade for project There’s a Germ Out There

Mady Coleman from Stinnett Elementary was the 2nd place winner in 6th grade for project Dermatoglyphics: Fingerprints

Jacob Morgan from Jackson City Schools was the 3rd place winner in 6th grade for project Water Electrolysis

 

7th Grade:

Todd Prater from Duff-Allen Central Elementary was the 1st place winner in 7th grade for project EMPs: The Need for Protection

Erin Lucas from Valley Elementary was the 2nd place winner in 7th grade for project Hold the Phone

Adeleigh Marshall from June Buchanan School was the 3rd place winner in 7th grade for project Effect of Heel Size on Balance

 

8th Grade:

Lucas Gibson from West Perry Elementary was the 1st place winner in 8th grade for project Floating Magnets

Riley Likens from the June Buchanan School was the 2nd place winner in 8th grade for project Effect of Water Type on Freezing

Ashton Long from Herald Whitaker Middle School was the 3rd place winner in 8th grade for project The Egg and Osmosis

 

9th Grade:

Courtney Breeding from the June Buchanan School was the 1st place winner in 9th grade with project Effect of Paper Towel Brand on Absorbency

McKenna Wireman from Prestonsburg High School was the 2nd place winner in 9th grade for project The Perfect Cookie

Madison Thornsberry from Floyd Central High School was the 3rd place winner in 9th grade for project Cleaning Pennies

 

10th Grade:

Kade Scott from Floyd Central High School was the 1st place winner in 10th grade for project The Effect of Sugar Type on Yeast Fermentation

Talen Hylton from Perry County Central High School was the 2nd place winner in 10th grade for project Energy Drink Dilemma

Olivia Arnett from Prestonsburg High School was the 3rd place winner in 10th grade for project Re -Think What You Drink

 

11th Grade:

Haley Likens from June Buchanan School was the 1st place winner in 11th grade for project Is Gatorade the Drink of Champions
