The Outpatient Rehabilitation Department at Pikeville Medical Center recently installed a specialized piece of equipment designed to test and treat balance, mobility, and vestibular deficits in patients. Patients at PMC with balance, mobility, and dizziness problems can now be tested on the SMART EquiTest system. The same technology used to measure equilibrium on NASA shuttle crews pre- and post-flight is now available to assess and treat patients with balance related problems. The machine administers a computerized assessment and analyzed on-site and interpreted by therapists, to determine impairment and necessary treatment.
