Two Injured in Harlan County Shooting

On Tuesday, December 11, 2018, around 8:41pm, Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan received a call about gunshot’s being fired in the parking lot of Cawood Elementary in Harlan County. Troopers and detectives responded to the scene and began an investigation. Multiple individuals were confirmed to be involved in the shooting the parking lot. Austin Brown, age 20, of Cawood, was struck in the eye as a result of multiple rounds of gunfire. Brown was later transported to University of Kentucky medical Center for treatment of injuries and was listed in serious condition. A second gunshot victim, a 15-year-old female juvenile, was struck in the hip area, possibly from a pellet from a shotgun. The female victim’s parents were notified and responded to the scene, who made the decision to not seek medical attention. Two small buildings owned by Cawood Elementary School suffered minor damage as a result of stray gunshots striking the buildings, though the actual school building was not damaged. While no students were inside the school at the time, custodial and maintenance staff were working inside at the time. No arrest has been made at this time and the incident is not believed to be involved with or targeting the school. The case remains under investigation.
