Around 4pm Monday, December 17, 2018, Governor Matt Bevin called for a special session of the Commonwealth’s legislature to begin at 8pm Monday night. The special session was called to address the state’s financial future, specifically pension reform. In calling the special session, Governor Bevin said Kentucky’s pension crisis represents the single greatest threat to the long-term financial health of the Commonwealth. He added that for the sakes of all current and future Kentuckians, the legislature must act immediately before the Commonwealth incurs further credit downgrades that will cost tens of millions of dollars for taxpayers. House Democratic Leader Rocky Adkins issued a statement on the special session, calling the governor’s actions appalling and a mockery of the legislative process and an attempt to silence the public. The session was called to a recess and will continue the afternoon of Tuesday, December 18, 2018.
